Support Local Toy Drives This Holiday Season

This Saturday, December 8, from 9 a.m. until noon at the Westfarms mall on New Britain Avenue, toys will be collected inside and outside of the mall.

You can also make a holiday donation to the Bridge Family Center at 1022 Farmington Avenue In West Hartford.

The Bridge Family Center has a holiday and a year-round wish list for the children and families they serve. Many of the families have expressed their needs through counseling sessions: The Bridge operates several residential programs for children and teens whose lives are in crisis. Most of these young people have suffered tragedy, abuse, or abandonment.

The most helpful gifts are gift cards, new rain and winter gear for infants, children, and teens: coats, hats, gloves, scarves, and snow pants; warm, fuzzy socks, slippers, and robes for children and teens; pajamas for children and teens; arts and crafts supplies: coloring books, crayons, colored pencils, stickers and art kits; new household items like twin and double sheets and comforters, towels, bath rugs, Tupperware, vacuums, paper towels, cleaning supplies, feminine products, and toiletries; and luggage – because many kids served by The Bridge arrive with their belongings in trash bags.

Other popular gift items include pre-paid cell phones; wallets for young men; bikes and helmets; Nintendo Wii, games, and accessories; Xbox 360 gaming consoles; new Duplo sets; and new picture books and novels (appropriate for pre-K and elementary school students).

The biggest wish of all is if someone could pay the rent for a year for a homeless youth.
