Time's Up Legislation Introduced

On Tuesday, my colleagues and I announced a legislative proposal that includes the largest overhaul in modern history of Connecticut's antiquated sexual harassment and sexual assault laws.

VIDEO: Time's Up

The Senate Democrats' proposal, known as the Time's Up Act, reforms Connecticut's sexual harassment and sexual assault laws and processes. The Act would also create stronger protections for victims and increase penalties for offenders.

This proposal reforms the Connecticut Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities (CHRO) complaint process and provides the agency with more support.

It strengthens and expands Connecticut's mandated reporter laws and eliminates statutes of limitation for all felony sexual assault crimes.

It calls for faster decision-making procedures and increases financial penalties for offenders.

It also provides for injunctive relief and punitive damages and eliminates secret settlements

This proposal will set a universal process for investigations of harassment complaints against school administrators and require increased training and education in Connecticut workplaces.

As a society, we are in the midst of a national and embarrassing awakening concerning sexual harassment and sexual assault. We have seen sexual harassment exposed from the White House to the workplace and have witnessed the heartbreaking stories of so many victims.

The Time's Up Act represents the largest overhaul in the modern history of Connecticut's sexual harassment and sexual assault laws.
