Supporting Families

Senator Duff receives award
I was very honored to receive the 2016 Friend of the Family award from the Connecticut Family Resource Center Alliance.

We are very fortunate in Norwalk to have three great Family Resource Centers in our schools.

Family Resource Centers provide a broad range of support services to both children and their parents. 74 centers are located in the State of Connecticut and offer resources including adult education classes, preschool and school-age child care, school readiness programs, positive youth development programming and training for daycare providers.

I want to thank Principal Martinez for his kind words and introduction, Monisha Gibson, Lynn Sadlon and Mary Oster for all their hard work.

Fighting Homelessness

I am proud to have helped secure new funding to support the Open Door Shelter that will help transform what has been a traditional homeless shelter into a place that looks to address the long-term needs of their clients and our community.

The Connecticut Department of Housing will provide up to $1.7 million to assist in the conversion of an abandoned historic industrial building into the SoNo Life Center, a mixed-use community services center providing 16 units of permanent supportive housing, together with a medical clinic and job training center. The funding was made possible under the state's Competitive Housing Assistance for Multifamily Properties (CHAMP) program.

When completed, the SoNo Life Center will bring together permanent supportive housing with accessible medical, mental health, outpatient treatment and job training to address the most pressing needs of the chronically homeless under one roof.

#DoYourJobThis week, I led passage of a resolution calling on the United States Senate to consider the nomination of Merrick Garland to be the next Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

The Court is susceptible to deadlock on important legal issues in the absence of nine Justices sitting on the Supreme Court. It is the duty of our elected officials to govern and ensure our Supreme Court can carry out its judicial responsibilities.

Judge Garland previously served as a clerk for the late Supreme Court Justice William Brennan, Deputy Attorney General in the Justice Department, and is currently the Chief Judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit. Before his nomination to the federal bench, Judge Garland led the investigation and prosecution that brought Oklahoma City bomber Timothy McVeigh to justice.

Copies of SR11 will be sent to President of the United States; the Vice President of the United States, the President Pro Tempore of the United States Senate; the Majority Leader of the United States Senate; and the Minority Leader of the United States Senate.

It's time for the United States Senate to act.

Four New Eagle Scouts

Eagle Scout citation
Congratulations to Darien's four new Eagle Scouts from Troop 35. Always a highlight to bring greetings on behalf of the Connecticut legislature with an official citation. Good work!
