Standing Up For You!

Growing our Bioscience Economy

This week, I was proud to join scientists, doctors and legislators at the Yale Center for Genome Analysis to cut the ribbon on two gene-sequencing machines that can map an individual's genes, revealing the cause of a genetic illness.

This investment highlights Yale's and Connecticut's commitment to the advancement of health and innovation in medicine and will have far-reaching and positive impacts on our healthcare, our economy and overall well-being for years to come.

Investments like this are changing the way we do medicine. We are entering into a revolution where medicine is a science of prediction, prevention, and strategic intervention.

Connecticut can be at the cutting edge of that revolution. We know that innovation and the management of big data will be defining characteristics of the most successful economies of the 21st century. With Connecticut's knowledge economy, we expect investments by early adopters like Yale to continue and to grow, making our state a magnet for entrepreneurs, innovators, start-ups and established organizations interested in expanding--much like Illumina here today.

Celebrating Women-Owned Business Day

I was honored to be invited to speak at Women-Owned Business Day, an annual event in the State Capitol complex hosted by the Women's Business Development Council to discuss policy issues facing women business owners and entrepreneurs.

Connecticut is home to more than 100,000 women-owned businesses that generate billions of dollars in sales, help the state attract talent, and diversify our economy.

Across the country, the number of women-owned firms in the U.S. continues to climb. Women-owned businesses account for roughly 30 percent of all Connecticut businesses and are a critically important piece of Connecticut's economy, generating billions of dollars in economic activity.

Support for the Maritime Aquarium

This week I was happy to take part in a $10,000 check presentation from Dominion to The Maritime Aquarium.

Dominion check presentation.

In partnership with Dominion, The Maritime Aquarium and Norwalk Parks & Recreation will design programming in correlation with International Coastal Clean-Up Day to help restore the habitat at Calf Pasture Beach used for school and biodiversity research.

Community members will be asked to join Aquarium educators in participating in clean-up, participate in activities to learn about the local and migratory animals that rely on this habitat for survival, and develop a deeper understanding and appreciation for the conservation research initiatives of The Maritime Aquarium in protecting the Long Island Sound.

Norwalk Day at the Capitol

Please join me for the 3rd annual Norwalk Day at the Capitol, a time to showcase our city to the rest of the state.

Nowalk Day

If you or your organization would like to participate, please call Dean at 860-240-0414 to be considered. We're especially looking for establishments that could donate some Norwalk goodies to eat.
