Back-to-School Savings: Tax-Free Week Begins This Sunday!

The new school year for most children begins in less than two weeks, and that means back-to-school shopping.

So once again, for the 17th year in a row, many items of clothing and footwear that cost less than $100 can be purchased without paying any Connecticut sales tax during “Sales Tax-Free Week” beginning this Sunday, August 20, and running through next Saturday, August 26.

Tax-free Week.

During Sales Tax-Free Week, most individual items of clothing and footwear priced under $100 are exempt from Connecticut’s sales tax. For items costing $100 or more, the sales tax is calculated on the full purchase price.

Connecticut is one of just 16 states in America that offers its residents a tax-free holiday for back-to-school clothing and footwear purchases. According to the National Retail Association, the average family with children in grades K-12 plans to spends about $600 on back-to-school shopping. That means Connecticut families will save about $4.1 million during this sales tax holiday week.

And there are no limits on how many items you can buy, as long as each individual item is priced less than $100.

I hope you’ll make some time to take advantage of these tax savings for your back-to-school needs!

UConn Stamford Continues to Grow

This week, I was happy to be on hand to officially open the first University of Connecticut--Stamford Campus residents' hall in downtown Stamford. Growing the Stamford Campus has long been a vision for many of us and I am happy to see it finally open. Investing in our higher educational system is good for our economy.

The UConn Stamford campus continues to grow and will have 1,700 undergraduates and 600 graduate students enrolled this year. With 116 units, the building is filling up fast and I predict that demand will continue to grow. Next week 260 full-time students, mostly freshmen, will begin moving into the building's 10 studios, 57 two-bedroom and 49 one-bedroom units.

Breaking Ground on the SoNo Collection

This week, I joined other Norwalk elected leaders and state officials at the groundbreaking ceremony for the SoNo Collection, a major new retail development in South Norwalk, Connecticut.

Norwalk is a growing and exciting place to be. I was proud to play a leading role in helping secure state brownfield remediation funds to help clean up a portion of the site that was crucial to the development.

Side by Side Community School Breaks Ground

Congratulations to Side by Side Community School on the groundbreaking for your upper school. I am proud to have helped secure a $2.5 million state grant and assist in moving kids out of a building that was quickly becoming unsafe.
