Standing Up For You!

This Saturday is Women's Equality Day

Women's Equality Day was designated by Congress in 1971 to commemorate the certification of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution, granting women the right to vote. Women's Equality Day also calls attention to women's continuing efforts toward full equality.

This week, I stoped by the Lockwood-Matthews Mansion, near the Women's History Trail, to take a moment to celebrate some of the many women throughout Connecticut's history who have broken new ground.

VIDEO: Women's Equality

One woman who was a trailblazer for equality in Norwalk is Marian Salzman. Salzman has been recognized with more awards than any other female public relations executive in North America. She is active on the mentoring board of Brown University's Women in Business and has been an outspoken advocate for diversity recruitment in the PR industry. She also spearheaded Connecticut's Creative Corridor job-creation initiative for Fairfield County and is an inspiration for young women throughout our region interested in careers in business

I also want to highlight the late Margaret Bourke-White, who was a Fairfield County resident, photographer and documentary photographer. She is best known as the first foreign photographer permitted to take pictures of the Soviet five-year plan, the first American female war photojournalist, and to have her photograph on the cover of the first issue of Life magazine.
