Earned Family Medical Leave Clears First Legislative Hurdle

This week, our Earned Family Medical Leave proposal cleared its first procedural hurdle needed to pass into law. Once again, passing an earned family and medical leave law is one of the top priorities of Democratic state senators this year.

Paid Family Leave

The United States is well behind the rest of the world when it comes to earned family medical leave policies. In fact, Papua New Guinea and the United States are the only countries in the world without earned family leave. If Connecticut wants to retain young people and attract top talent, passing an earned family medical leave bill will give Connecticut a competitive advantage and send a message that our state values its workers and is a great place to live and raise a family.

Because it is so necessary and beneficial to our modern workforce, Democrats will work with employees and employers to fight for sensible earned family medical leave legislation.

Fighting for Net Neutrality

This week, I participated in an informational meeting of the General’s Assembly’s Energy and Technology Committee on the importance of preserving net neutrality.

VIDEO: Net Nuetrality

We have spent a lot of time in this state trying to spur creativity and create more entrepreneurs. Without net neutrality principles, entrepreneurs working online in our state will face a significant hurdle. Our established businesses will have to pay more, and our consumers will have to make choices they don’t have to now.

One question I would like everyone to ask themselves is this: if internet service providers have no interest in throttling internet speeds and forcing customers to pay for content, then why have they fought net neutrality so much?

That’s why I introduced Senate Bill 2 to hold companies to their commitments not to block websites, throttle speeds, or impose prioritization pricing, and to establish a process for internet service providers to certify that they will not engage in practices inconsistent with net neutrality principles.
