A Champion for Connecticut’s Environment

This week, I was honored to receive the 2017 Environmental Champion Award from Citizens Campaign for the Environment. Connecticut's environment is one of our state's most vital assets, and its protection is critical to the future of our state and our economy. I have worked together with the Citizens Campaign for the Environment to pass laws that have removed toxic pesticides from playgrounds, expanded access to green energy, and protected Long Island Sound and state waterways from plastic pollutants.

This past session, we passed laws to prohibit the use of coal tar road sealants on roadways, established a "herbicide right to know" along railroad right-of-ways, and promoted the adoption of "cow power," a renewable energy technology that generates electricity from cow manure. In addition, we passed the new "Passport to Parks" program, which will provide needed financial sustainability to our parks and provide state residents with unlimited access to these environmental treasures.

These laws have passed with strong, bipartisan support, and the advocacy of Citizen's Campaign for the Environment helped make that happen. I look forward to continuing to work with them in the upcoming legislative session as we continue the fight to ensure Connecticut's environment remains intact for the benefit of future generations.

Promoting Equality for People with Disabilities

As an amputee and childhood bone cancer survivor, I have spent my life fighting for fairness and equal opportunities for people with disabilities. I know that many individuals with disabilities face significant financial challenges. That’s why I introduced and helped to pass a new law that enhances and expands the use of tax-advantaged savings accounts. Families will now be allowed to contribute to a protected account to pay for disability-related expenses, such as transportation and housing, without jeopardizing a person’s eligibility for Medicaid and Social Security.
