Re-Funding the Medicare Savings Program

As a direct result of the incredible advocacy of seniors, people with disabilities and their families, the General Assembly voted this week to restore $54.5 million in state funding for the Medicare Savings Program (MSP), a state-subsidized program that helps poor elderly and disabled residents pay for their monthly Medicare Part B premiums and save on their Medicare Part D prescription drug costs.

State officials estimated that as many as 113,000 Connecticut residents could have been impacted by the MSP cuts that were included in the bipartisan budget which passed the General Assembly late last year.

The legislation we passed secures the MSP funding through June 30.

MSP Restored

In 2010, the Connecticut legislature vastly expanded access to the MSP, and we now have perhaps the most generous MSP plan in America. Connecticut's monthly income limits for the program are about twice the national average, and Connecticut imposes no asset test on MSP recipients, unlike most other states.

I am proud to support our seniors and provide them with increased financial security to help them remain in their homes and continue to support the local economy. Thank you to everyone who contacted my office about this critical issue. It is due to your advocacy that I was able to work with my colleagues on legislation that will save this program.

Join Me for Office Hours in North Branford

Serving the needs of my constituents is my number one priority. That’s why I have continued to hold regular office hours in the communities that I represent. I value my open office hours because I get to meet new people, engage in meaningful conversations and learn about the issues that are most important to the residents and businesses of my towns. Past meetings have given me important insight into how I can better represent you and have led to several legislative proposals. I recently scheduled office hours in North Branford so that I can hear from you and the other residents of our state Senate District. I hope you will be able to attend one of my office hours so I can speak with you about the work I’ve done on your behalf and hear your suggestions on how I can best work to help meet your needs.

My office hours are open to all citizens of the 12th Senate District, which includes the towns of Branford, Guilford, Madison, North Branford, Durham and Killingworth. Even if you cannot attend, you can always contact me or my legislative aide about how I can address the issues that you and your family care about. I will continue to keep an open door as we work together to make our region of the state an even better place to live and to work.

The schedule for these upcoming open office hours is as follows:
Wednesday, January 24, 2017 from 5:00 - 6:30 p.m.
