Governor Holds Ceremonial Signing for Casino Bill

I was happy to join my colleague Senator Cathy Osten, who was instrumental in our fight to protect jobs in Connecticut, when Governor Malloy held a ceremonial bill signing for our casino legislation.

This is a very important moment for our state. Passing this bill allows Connecticut's two tribal nations, which currently operate the Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casinos, to partner on a third satellite casino in East Windsor and retain 9,300 existing jobs.

The East Windsor casino will also create 1,700 construction jobs and 1,700 casino facility operation jobs--1,275 of which will be permanent, full time positions--and generate tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue for the State of Connecticut.

I am proud to say I fought for this legislation to protect the jobs of our hardworking men and women in Connecticut's tourism industry.

For recent high school grads getting ready to head off to college next month, South Windsor Youth & Family Services will hold a workshop this month to help students get off to a good start in their higher education careers.

The one-day college prep program is called THRIVE, and is open to students entering their freshman year of college or senior year of high school. It's free of charge, and will be held at South Windsor Community Center on Thursday, July 27, from 5:00 to 8:30 p.m.

Teens will learn about important life skills like coping with stress, living with roommates, and making good connections, as well as about campus safety, nutrition, and managing expectations in the face of a new reality.

Over the next several weeks, South Windsor will also hold programs for younger children and families, including a Moving On Up program for students entering Timothy Edwards Middle School in the fall.

You can find more information on the different programs and events here or by visiting the Town of South Windsor’s website.
