Lifting as We Climb

Holding Absentee Landlords Responsible

You may have seen recently on WVIT-NBC 30 or read in The Hartford Courant about a New York City-based landlord who has been neglecting his duty to keep some apartments in the Clay Arsenal section of Hartford in a livable condition.

I recently joined some of those tenants and the Rev. Ashley "AJ" Johnson at Shiloh Baptist Church on Albany Avenue to make this injustice public.

The landlord owns the 26 subsidized buildings that comprise the Renaissance Apartments, and they have had longstanding problems with rodent infestations, unsecured balconies, and mold.

If this was happening in any other community outside North Hartford, it would have been solved immediately.

Officials from the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) have inspected the properties, found “serious health and safety concerns,” and have made the landlord make some corrections.

But we as a people have to hold the landlord and HUD accountable. Some temporary fixes may have been made, but if we check back six months from now, and the same problems persists, we will have failed in our efforts to secure justice for these residents.

As always, if you are in need, you can always contact my office at 840-240-1453.
