Legislators Go "Inside the Box" at the State Capitol

Last week, I worked with ACLU-CT to bring a replica solitary confinement cell to the State Capitol building.

"Inside the Box" was created to help people understand that prolonged isolation is a form of torture. Anyone who couldn't make it to the exhibit while it was on display at the New Haven Free Public Library in February had another chance to get a glimpse of what it's like to be in solitary confinement.

Dozens of people, including legislators, advocates, and local residents, visited the cell at the South Lobby of the State Capitol building between Feb. 21 and March 2.

I spent 2 hours and 23 minutes inside on Feb. 21. It was a strange experience. I had no sense of time, the eerie noises from the pre-recorded audio of a solitary confinement cell disrupted my thoughts, and I couldn't focus on anything. It definitely had an impact on me.

I'm urging all my colleagues in the General Assembly to support solitary confinement reform.
