New Haven Police & Fire Hiring City Residents

Our city police and fire departments are looking to hire more people from New Haven. They understand that people who live and grew up here know more about the city and have a vested interest in our community, which can make all the difference when you're serving as a police officer or firefighter.

Apply to Be a New Haven Police Officer

Applications for the Police Department will be available June 5-23. Up to 500 city residents can apply. City residents will receive an automatic 10-point bump on your entrance exam. A recruitment drive and a physical test for potential new recruits will be held July 8-9. Those that pass the physical test will be able to sit for the written exam July 15.


What you need to apply:

  • 21 years of age
  • High School Diploma/GED
  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Valid Driver's License
  • No Felony convictions
  • No class A or B Misdemeanor convictions
  • No Domestic Violence convictions

Apply to Be a New Haven Firefighter


The Fire Department is looking to hire a class of 35 firefighters this fall. Applications went live online on May 4 and there are still slots available for New Haven residents to apply until the end of the month. City residents are invited to fill out applications at the New Haven Free Public Library, 133 Elm Street, or at the Fire Training Academy, 230 Ella T. Grasso Boulevard.
