Statement of Senator Carlo Leone on Today’s Release of I-95 Widening Study

State Senator Carlo Leone, (D-Stamford), who is Senate Co-Chair of the legislature’s Transportation Committee, issued the following statement today in response to Governor Malloy’s release of the I-95 widening study and his comments on the need to stabilize Connecticut’s Special Transportation Fund to pay for such improvements.

“The governor today described the type of typical congestion that I—and anyone who travels our roadways—have to contend with every time I drive up to Hartford to debate the problem of traffic congestion on Connecticut’s highways. The recommendations we heard today to widen I-95 at key locations can work, as we have recent upgrades to illustrate that fact. I am ever-hopeful that we can find a way to improve Connecticut’s roadways, and securing necessary revenue will be key to ongoing and future transportation projects.

“As we move to discuss options in the Transportation Committee, it is imperative that we flesh out all avenues of thought. But the more that members of the legislature refuse to discuss how we should fund the Special Transportation Fund, the worse the problem will become. It is now beyond critical, and more jobs and businesses will be lost to surrounding states who have invested in their transportation systems. Those who choose to make this a political argument, instead of the economic driver argument that it is and should be, are being less than truthful with their constituents.

“The reality is, Connecticut’s transportation delivery system is now inadequate to meet the demands of our future. Our responsibility is to find solutions to reverse this fact. I look forward to working with my colleagues, as long as their ideas are based in fact and reality; otherwise, simple opposition, or simply doing nothing, is an act that we simply and absolutely cannot afford.”
