Sen. Osten, Rep. Conley Seek Follow-Up Meeting on Port Authority

HARTFORD – State Senator Cathy Osten (D-Sprague) and state Representative Christine Conley (D-Groton) today requested that the co-chairs of the Transportation Committee hold a follow-up informational hearing on the Connecticut Port Authority and invite “past and current board chairs and employees of the Port Authority” to offer testimony.

Those employees largely did not testify at the first informational hearing held on Tuesday, August 20.

“We now respectfully request that the Transportation Committee hold a second informational hearing and invite past and current board chairs and employees of the Port Authority to offer their opinions on what went wrong at the Port Authority and what we as legislators can do to correct or prevent such occurrences in the future,” Sen. Osten and Rep. Conley wrote Transportation Committee Co-Chairs Sen. Carlo Leone (D-Stamford) and Rep. Roland Lemar (D-New Haven). “We believe that as policymakers it is critically important that we gather as much information as possible to better inform and guide any decisions we ultimately may make regarding the Connecticut Port Authority.”

“At the first hearing legislators requested a variety of documents pertaining to Port Authority policies and finances, and we haven’t seen those yet. So a second hearing would be a good opportunity to follow-up with past and current employees and get some information on those documents as well answer any new questions we may have,” Rep. Conley said today.

“This was never intended to be a one-and-done type hearing. There were too many unanswered questions and too much information that we still need to review if we are going to make the Port Authority work in the manner that we all intended it to when the legislature created it five years ago,” Sen. Osten said. “I think a second hearing with these invited guests would be very helpful while we await the next Port Authority report from the state auditors, which should be done next month.”
