Colapietro Applauds Grant for the Bristol Community Organization

State Senator Thomas Colapietro (D-Bristol) today announced that the Bristol Community Organization, Inc. (BCO) will receive a grant for $31,502 to renovate a 100-square-foot former restaurant to build a community kitchen at the organization's 55 South Street location.

The organization, which serves the towns of Bristol, Burlington, Farmington, Plainville and Plymouth and helps nearly 8,000 residents annually, will use the grant to complete the fundraising for the project, which is slated to be completed this fall. The BCO plans to use the kitchen to prepare healthy breakfasts and lunches for Head Start children and to offer nutrition education.

The BCO also hopes to expand the community kitchen program through greater funding to offer courses to middle school children attending after-school programs; the program would teach healthy recipes for participants to take home to their families.

"I'm very glad that the Bristol Community Organization will receive this grant and will be able to complete their renovations," said Senator Colapietro. "The BCO does great work for Bristol and its surrounding towns. This program is just another way that the BCO will make a positive contribution to the community and families in need."

"We certainly appreciate Senator Colapietro's efforts in obtaining this grant and all the work he does to help us and the people we serve," said Thomas H. Morrow, who has served as the executive director of the BCO since 1988.

The grant is part of more than $800,000 recently awarded to eleven nonprofit organization across the state by the Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority (CHEFA). CHEFA has been awarding grants to nonprofits that provide critical health, education and human services since its 2003 inception.

Founded in 1965, the BCO is a private nonprofit community action agency serving the young, elderly, handicapped and economically disadvantaged individuals and families, with the mission to help eliminate or alleviate the causes and effects of poverty in the Greater Bristol Area.
