State Senator Thomas A. Colapietro (D-Bristol) today welcomed the release of Small Town Economic Assistance Program (STEAP) grants for the towns of Plymouth and Harwinton. The grants-part of a $20 million allocation for STEAP grants released by the State Bond Commission today-will help support local capital improvement projects.
"STEAP grants help local governments meet their needs without placing an undue burden on local property taxpayers," said Senator Colapietro. "I'm very glad that Harwinton and Plymouth will receive these grants and will be able to address some of the needs that both of these communities have."
Harwinton will receive $420,000 for renovations and construction of an additional building for use by the Harwinton Volunteer Ambulance Association. Plymouth will receive $300,000 for various improvements and construction projects in historic downtown Terryville.
The STEAP grant program pays for economic development, community conservation and quality of life projects for municipalities that are ineligible to receive Urban Action bond funds because of their size. STEAP funds can only be used for capital projects.
Last year, the legislature authorized $20 million in bonding each in fiscal years 2008 and 2009 for STEAP grants.
