The co-chair of the General Assembly’s General Law Committee, Senator Thomas Colapietro is again supporting legislation that would ban gasoline zone pricing to help equalize gas prices in Connecticut and to provide more relief for consumers.
With strong support from Senator Colapietro, the Senate passed legislation in 2006 and 2007 to prohibit zone pricing to deal with the wide range of gas prices in Connecticut, but the measures were not approved in the House of Representatives. This year, the General Law Committee is considering another bill that is co-sponsored by Senator Colapietro.
S.B. 6518 An Act Concerning the Fair price of Gasoline is designed to ban the practice of gasoline zone price and to discourage gasoline price gouging. It will prohibit geographic zone pricing of gasoline and indicates that no person shall discriminate in the price of gas charged to a retail seller of gas except to recover actual transportation costs and to offer discounts or rebates.
“I have successfully passed gas zone pricing legislation twice now in the Senate, but only to have it fail in the House of Representatives. I still support the concept because it will benefit consumers and I hope this year, my co-chair Representative Jim Shapiro (D-Stamford) can get it approved in the House,” said Senator Colapietro.
“The gas station operators say they want fair market pricing and they should be able to buy it the same gas out of the same tank and at the same price. That would let the market compete and that should help consumers,” concluded Senator Colapietro.
