Hundreds of Seniors and Veterans Attend Special Expo in Bristol

Senator Colapietro says 2nd annual fair featured 40 agencies and vendors — offering help and advice for families

Bristol — Hundreds of area residents were in attendance on Wednesday as Senator Thomas A. Colapietro (D-Bristol) hosted his second annual Seniors & Veterans Expo at Bristol Eastern High School. The annual event draws residents from many of the surrounding towns to gather information, speak with officials from government agencies, and learn more about the various social services that are available to seniors and veterans.

“This year’s fair was a great success! I was very pleased to see how many people turned out today, we definitely broke the attendance record from last year,” said Senator Colapietro. “I really enjoy holding these fairs. A lot of folks come out and hopefully learn some useful information that they might not find out about otherwise.”

The fair featured forty agencies and vendors offering information and services on a variety of issues and topics. Present were representatives from Bristol Hospital, the state Department of Social Services, the Social Security Administration, the Department of Veterans Affairs, the state Commission on Aging, the Connecticut Energy Efficiency Fund, the Bristol Veteran’s Council, the Plymouth Senior Center, a Medicare bus offering screening services, and many other organizations and government agencies.

“Everyone here has been very nice, and I found out a lot of useful things about senior health services,” said Mrs. Ethel Zanetti, a fair attendee and Bristol resident. “I got a lot of my questions answered, and everyone was very polite.”

Many vendors, including the representatives of Bristol Hospital, offered health screening services to those in attendance.

“There was a great turnout this year,” said Linda Crawford, a Registered Nurse at Bristol Hospital. “I’ve been taking blood pressure readings all morning, and giving advice on steps everyone can take to keep their blood pressure under control.”

“The information on electricity was really interesting,” said Mrs. Linda Hill of Southington. “If you wash your clothes in cold water and change out your old light bulbs for the new ones, they say you can save a lot on your electric bill.”
