Senator Eric Coleman (D-Bloomfield) will have a key role in reviewing criminal justice sentencing policies in Connecticut. Senate President Pro Tempore Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) has appointed Senator Coleman to the newly created Connecticut Sentencing Task Force that will review criminal justice and sentencing policies and laws in the state. The goal is to create a more just, effective and efficient system of criminal sentencing.
"Senator Coleman has been a long time member of the legislature's Judiciary Committee and has a wealth of knowledge about Connecticut's criminal justice system," said Senator Williams. "I'm convinced he will do an excellent job as this task force fully reviews sentencing procedures in our state."
Created earlier this year by the General Assembly, the Connecticut Sentencing Task Force will identify overarching criminal justice and sentencing goals and policies, define current sentencing models and guidelines and will also review the actual versus intended impact of sentencing policies.
The panel will also review the fines and terms of imprisonment specified for violations of criminal statues that are classified or unclassified felonies and misdemeanors and make recommendations including whether the penalty or type of penalty for certain crimes should be revised or eliminated or if crimes that are obsolete should be repealed.
"Fair, consistent, purposeful and effective sentencing can contribute immensely to the credibility of the entire criminal justice system," said Senator Coleman. "I look forward to serving on this task force because there are so many issues to be questioned and examined, including whether or not society would be better served if the mentally ill were treated within the health care system rather than incarcerated."
