Senator Eric Coleman (D-Bloomfield) supported legislation that is designed to provide some financial relief to working families in Connecticut. He voted in favor of a bill approved by the Senate to increase the minimum wage to $8.00 an hour. The bill was approved earlier by the House of Representatives.
H.B. An Act Concerning the Minimum Wage raises the state minimum hourly wage from $7.65 to $8.00 beginning January 1, 2009 and to $8.25 beginning January 1, 2010.
Senator Coleman rejected the claims by opponents of the legislation who claimed the legislation could have an adverse impact on small businesses. He said with the decline in the economy, the increase in the minimum wage is needed to provide some assistance to low income workers.
"With the increase in the cost of electricity, the costs of gasoline and the overall cost of living, it only makes good sense to increase the minimum wage as a means of assisting the working poor in meeting those increases," said Senator Coleman.
