The Foundation for Educational Advancement honored Senator Eric Coleman (D-Bloomfield) for his continued dedication to the elimination of childhood lead poisoning in Connecticut. Senator Coleman was presented with the award on May 22nd during the 2008 Health Education Lead Poisoning Community and Parent Informational Forum at the Legislative Office Building.
Lead poisoning continues to be a problem in Connecticut because of chipped or peeling paint, lead in dust and certain toys. Lead poisoning can cause damage to the brain, damage to the nervous system, hearing loss and learning disabilities.
The forum was part of a Health Education Lead Poisoning Initiative to focus on efforts to keep Connecticut's children lead safe and lead free. A number of national, state, local officials and experts discussed ways to reduce and eliminate children's exposure to lead hazards and what can be done in the home and the community to deal with the problem of lead poisoning. Information was also provided on free screening for children.
"I want to recognize Senator Eric Coleman for his dedicated service to eliminate childhood lead poisoning and to improve the quality of health and education of Connecticut's children," said Dr. Vivian Cross, the executive Director of the Foundation for Educational Advancement.
"I want to thank Dr. Cross for her phenomenal leadership on the lead issue. She and others have educated me concerning the importance of earlier and more frequent screenings for the detection of lead levels in children," said Senator Coleman. "Additionally, I have been pleased to work on programs designed to assist landlords with the remediation of lead contaminated apartment units. Because I am greatly concerned that all children have a safe environment in which to develop, I look forward to continuing to work on this issue."
