Coleman and Fonfara Say Third Budget Mitigation Plan Still Includes $134,000 in Funding for School Safety Projects in Hartford

Financial help can still be on the way to improve school security projects in Hartford. Senator John Fonfara (D-Hartford) and Senator Eric Coleman (D-Bloomfield) helped to protect $134,712 in funding for school safety projects for schools in Hartford which, Governor Rell and Republican lawmakers wanted to eliminate in the latest budget mitigation plan.

Last week the General Assembly approved a budget mitigation package that reduces the state budget deficit by approximately $1.1 billion, but as a result of the support of Senators Fonfara and Coleman it still includes $1.8 million in funding for school security improvements in Hartford and other school districts across the state.

The funding is part of the S.A.F.E (Security Assistance For Education) initiative that was approved in 2007 to provide school systems with funding for school security assessments, security infrastructure grants, security training and equipment and for school construction grants.

The $134,712 is for school safety programs at twelve schools in Hartford: $17,702 Milner Elementary School, $4,142 for Bellizzi Middle School, $28,098 for West Middle School, $27,000 for Quirk Middle School, $4,142 for Rawson School, $28,776 for Fox School, $4,142 for Martin Luther King School, $4,142 for Kennelly School, $4,142 for Dwight Elementary School, $4,142 for Breakthrough 11 Academy, $4,142 for Moylan School and $4,142 for the Mark Twain School.

“Our schools must guarantee an absolutely safe, secure environment in order for students to learn and excel in the classroom,” said Senator Fonfara. “I am pleased that we were able to safeguard this critical funding — parents need to be sure that their children are completely protected at school.”

“Especially with respect to schools, safety and security are important issues because at these places students need to feel comfortable enough to take full advantage of the opportunity for learning and development,” said Senator Coleman. “This investment is important for the fulfillment of student potential and the preparation for life.”
