Senator Eric Coleman addresses a group on the steps of the State Capitol gathered to support policies that promote equality and justice for all CT residents, including drug law, housing, education, healthcare and prison reform.

Senator Eric Coleman (D-Bloomfield, Hartford, and Windsor) and Senator Ed Gomes (D-Bridgeport) gathered on the steps of the State Capitol Wednesday afternoon with activists from across the state in support of a legislative agenda that promotes equality and justice for all Connecticut residents.

“I am very pleased today to see so many people gathered here in support of a civil justice agenda for the legislature—eliminating racial profiling, supporting prisoner’s successful re-entry into society, palliative marijuana and marijuana decriminalization,” said Senator Coleman. “I am encouraged by your activism today. Make sure your voices are heard, that you speak with legislators and let them know your interests.”

Senator Coleman was recognized at the event for his many years of service in the General Assembly in support of similar issues.

“Senator Coleman has been here at the Capitol for some time, and he knows how to get things done. Though I’m older than him, he’s been my mentor. Senator Coleman’s soft, classic manner demands respect, and as Co-Chair of the powerful Judiciary Committee, he produces results for the people of his district and the state of Connecticut,” said Senator Gomes.

Senator Gomes added, “It’s fantastic to have so many activists here at the Capitol today. Together, we have passed bills to provide dignity for people living in public housing, to get them involved in their communities and ensure their grievances are heard. And we will keep working to provide healthcare to those too poor to be able to afford it, to abolish the death penalty, and make more progress toward a just society.”

The senators were joined at the event by Rep. Gary Holder-Winfield (D-New Haven), Chair of the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus, and representatives from: Civic Trust Public Lobbying Co., A Better Way Foundation, Voices of Women of Color, Judah House, My Brother’s Keeper, Hartford Knights Youth Football and Cheer LLC, Blue Hills Civic Association, The Peace Keepers, Heroes of Hope, Johnson Stewart Community Center, CT Citizens for Marijuana Reform, LEAP CT (Law Enforcement Against Prohibition), Common Cause CT, CT Parents Union and the Council on Islamic-American Relations.

Senator Coleman has served the 2nd Senate District communities of Hartford, Bloomfield and Windsor since 1995. He is Senate Chair of the legislature’s Judiciary Committee.

Senator Edwin Gomes represents Bridgeport and Stratford in the state Senate, and serves as Senate Chair of the Housing Committee.
