Senator Joseph Crisco (D-Woodbridge), Quinnipiac University, and the Connecticut Women's Education and Legal Fund have sponsored the 6th annual "Girls and Technology Expo" that was held Wednesday, May 17th at Quinnipiac University in Hamden. The expo was held on campus from 8:00 a.m. to 1:35 p.m.
"The expo has been extremely successful and I'm pleased it continues to attract more students," said Senator Crisco. "It is an excellent way to provide these young women with valuable information about technology and career opportunities."
This year approximately 146 seventh grade girls from schools in the towns of Ansonia, Bethany, Branford, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck, New Haven, Prospect, Wallingford and Woodbridge participated in the program. Most of the students are from communities in Senator Crisco's 17th District. (List of participating schools attached)
The students attended sessions on computer programming, broadcast technology, women and math, technology and respiratory therapy and stock trading. The sessions will be offered in various locations around the Quinnipiac campus, including the HDTV studio in the Ed McMahon Mass Communications Center and the Terry W. Goodwin Financial Technology Center.
The teachers also attended a workshop, "Technology Fluency: A Tale of Two Genders," offered by Don Buckley, professor of biology and director of learning technology in the School of Health Sciences at Quinnipiac.
In addition, students and teachers toured the State police's Mobile Crime Van, which will have its newly acquired crime scene procession equipment on display. State police officers will be on hand to answer questions.
"The Girls and Technology Expo is one of the finest programs I've ever been involved in where technology is an ever pressing demand for us to improve upon," said Senator Crisco. "I believe this not only helps our goal to enhance technology education but also gives these young women a realistic insight into what options that may be available to them for careers, which normally they may not have the opportunity to learn about."
