Senator Joseph Crisco (D-Woodbridge) was one of the leading co-sponsors of bill approved by the Senate and House of Representatives that is designed to increase staffing levels at the volunteer fire departments in some of the smaller cities and towns across Connecticut. It would directly benefit all of the 17th District communities of Ansonia, Beacon Falls, Bethany, Derby, Hamden, Naugatuck and Woodbridge.
Senator Crisco's leadership was instrumental in getting the Senate to approve the bill. It bill would allow municipalities with paid firefighters to enter into formal agreement with neighboring towns and allow its professionals to join their hometown volunteer fire departments.
The carefully crafted language of this bill benefits local governments with professional fire departments that don't want liability for volunteer-related accidents and injuries to their paid firefighters. It also benefits the small towns where professional firefighters live because those firefighters would now be permitted to volunteer their considerable talent and experience.
"The volunteer fire departments play a very important public safety role in the smaller cities and towns across our state. This will especially help provide adequate coverage during the day time hours," said Senator Crisco. "This legislation will make it easier for these departments to attract more volunteers and that will help improve the firefighting operations of these communities."
