State Senator Bob Duff (D-Norwalk), vice chair of the General Assembly’s Transportation Committee, has asked the state Department of Transportation (DOT) to clarify why the “lay of the land” has caused construction on Route 7 in Brookfield to stop.
On October 22, Senator Duff expressed concerns about the project and requested a status report on all Route 7 construction from DOT Commissioner Joseph Marie.
“Candidly, my inquiry stems from concerns brought to my attention that I feel, as vice chair of the General Assembly’s Transportation Committee, warrant my attention and the committee’s oversight,” Senator Duff wrote on October 22. “These concerns regard potential construction problems on the Brookfield/New Milford line; as such, I feel it is imperative that the department answer this request and either alleviate or validate these concerns with a status report.”
Responding to that letter, the department provided a status report on the project, indicating that an $88 million bypass construction project was halted in July 2008 because “lay of the land is different than anticipated.”
The project, which the department estimates is approximately 65 percent complete, must now be redesigned and reevaluated by the state Department of Environmental Protection before construction can resume.
In his letter today, Senator Duff asked the DOT to clarify what the “lay of the land” and delay in construction means in terms of design and cost in Brookfield.
