Senator John Fonfara (D-Hartford) endorsed legislation to help provide some financial relief to working families in Connecticut when he voted in favor of a bill approved by the Senate to increase the minimum wage to $8.00 an hour. The bill was approved earlier by the House of Representatives.
H.B. An Act Concerning the Minimum Wage raises the state minimum hourly wage from $7.65 to $8.00 beginning January 1, 2009 and to $8.25 beginning January 1, 2010.
Critics said the legislation could have an adverse impact on small businesses, but Senator Fonfara rejected that argument. He said with the decline in the economy and the higher cost of living, the increase in the minimum wage is needed to help low income workers.
"The majority of people in minimum wage jobs are working people who are trying to raise families, 60% of them women, many single mothers," said Senator Fonfara. "The fight to reduce and eliminate child poverty in our state starts with paying a fair minimum wage to these workers. We need to make it just a little easier for those people out there struggling to pay the bills everyday."
