Harris Appointed Chairman of Public Health Committee
State Senator Jonathan A. Harris (D-West Hartford) was appointed today as Senate Chairman of the Public Health Committee, which has cognizance over all matters relating to public health in Connecticut, including emergency medical services, all licensing boards within the state Department of Public Health, nursing homes, pure food and drugs, and controlled substances, including substance abuse treatment.
Sen. Harris served most recently as Senate Chairman of the Human Services Committee, which has cognizance over the state Departments of Social Services and Children and Families, among others. It was in that role that Sen. Harris helped to successfully de-link the state’s established HUSKY program from the new Charter Oak Health Plan.
“My two years as Senate chairman of the Human Services Committee gave me a good foundation in health care policy, including programs like HUSKY and Charter Oak. I understand the limits of these programs and the crying need for something more than these valuable but limited solutions,” Sen. Harris said. “As far as public policy goes, a priority has always been health care, and now as Senate chairman of the Public Health Committee I’ll be able to put all my energy and experience into that. It’s obviously an issue of national importance, but it’s also critically important to Connecticut businesses and municipal leaders, their employees, and the hundreds of thousands of mothers and fathers and children who lack real health care.”
Senator Harris assumes his new duties when the legislature begins its new session on January 7.
