Senate President Pro Tem Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn), a proponent of open space and farmland preservation in Connecticut, will tour the Regional Vocational Agriculture Center at Killingly High School (79 Westfield Ave., Danielson) on Monday, March 20, 2006 at 8:00 a.m. The regional program serves students from the surrounding 12-town area, including many of the communities which Sen. Williams serves.
"It's important for students to understand the role which agricultural businesses play in our state's economy," Sen. Williams said. "Particularly in this section of the state, which prides itself on its rich agricultural heritage, the Regional Vocational Agriculture Program at Killingly High School is a model."
Sen. Williams will celebrate National Agriculture Day with the students, and take a tour of the facility with students and staff. Following the tour, Sen. Williams will discuss with the students, the farmland and open space preservation measures before the General Assembly this session.
The Regional Vocational Agriculture Center is a comprehensive program based at Killingly High School, open to students from Brooklyn, Plainfield, Canterbury, Putnam, Eastford, Sterling, Griswold, Thompson, Killingly, Voluntown, Pomfret and Woodstock. The program provides students with classroom agriculture instruction, as well as hands-on experience in the field. Student may choose one of four specialized plans of study, including animal science, agriculture mechanics, and horticulture and aquaculture/natural resources.
All members of the press are invited to attend. The tour will begin at 8 a.m. at the Regional Vocational Agriculture Center
