Williams to Receive Historic Preservation Award

Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) will today be honored as a Harlan H. Griswold Award for Historic Preservation recipient by the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation. Sen. Williams, former chair of the legislature's Environment Committee, has been a proponent of both open space and historic preservation in Connecticut, and was the chief sponsor of a bill last year protecting farmland, open space and historic preservation efforts.

"Preserving our state's remaining farmland and historic structures go hand-in-hand," Sen. Williams said. "Connecticut has a rich agricultural past and many of our state's historic structures are based on that way of life. We need to ensure that future generations will be able to enjoy both the state's farmland and historic buildings."

Sen. Williams was chosen to receive the award based on his unwavering support of 2005's S.B. 410, "An Act Concerning Farmland Preservation, Open Space Protections, Historic Preservation and Affordable Housing." According to Helen Higgins, executive director of the Connecticut Trust for Historic Preservation, Sen. Williams' "vision, leadership and dedication ...in shepherding S.B. 410...to passage and implementation will result in a major reinvigoration of historic preservation as a central and essential component to the quality of life in our state."

"Farming is crucial to the state's economy, bringing in an estimated $2.2 billion," Sen. Williams said. "In addition, it guarantees a land base for long-term food security, a habitat for many species of wildlife, a natural purification system for our water supply, and provides protection against flooding.

Sen. Williams serves the 29th Senatorial District communities including Brooklyn, Canterbury, Killingly, Mansfield, Putnam, Scotland, Thompson and Windham.
