State Senate President Pro Tempore Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) today praised House passage of "Senate Bill 1: Connecticut jobs for the 21st Century." The most sweeping economic development and jobs package in years will now be considered by Governor Rell. The measure passed unanimously in the state Senate.
"In the first week of this year, we unveiled a comprehensive economic development plan designed to keep Connecticut competitive in an ever-changing global economy," said Sen. Williams. "The vision was one of preparing the state to compete against not only Massachusetts, New York or the Midwest, but against Brazil, Bulgaria or Beijing."
Added Sen. Williams, "Our Senate Democratic Caucus was fully committed to aggressively pursuing business and job growth opportunities in the state for all of our residents. This is a well-defined, integrated proposal that we believe the governor can and should support. It is a plan for a new and comprehensive course toward growing and maintaining skilled jobs in our state."
Sen. Williams developed the ambitious economic development plan after months of forums and meetings with every sector of the business and education communities. Months later, similar plans have been floated by other legislative caucuses and, on opening day of the General Assembly session, by Governor Rell herself.
Added Sen. Williams, "Connecticut has always been known for its creativity, educated workforce, ambience and desirable standard of living. Our goals remain constant. We will continue to achieve our greatest potential."
