State Senate President Pro Tempore Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) has received two awards from two state agencies charged with addressing children issues.
Yesterday, the Office of the Child Advocate recognized Sen. Williams for his "efforts in championing change for Connecticut children with disabilities and complex medical conditions." He received the award at a forum held at St. Joseph's College in West Hartford. "When Sen. Williams was first elected to the state Senate, the minute he was in the door, he called and asked, 'what can I do to help?'" said Jeanne Milstein, the state's Child Advocate. "His work has continued ever since."
Today, Sen. Williams received a special honor from the General Assembly's Commission on Children for his leadership on child nutrition. The commission noted that Sen. Williams "steered a clear vision for children's health in schools. In an effort to address one factor in the growth of child obesity, he tackled the soft beverage industry's interests in school vending machines. In just two years, he anchored the strongest school vending machine rules in the nation. Persistent, strategic, Sen. Williams led this gain in spite of large business interests hammering away at this commitment."
