State Senate President Pro Tempore Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) today said Frito Lay has won a state grant of $1.7 million to help the company's Killingly plant provide its own electrical generation needs and thus taking them off the regional power grid.
The grant was made available through the Energy Independence Act introduced by Sen. Williams and passed by the General Assembly in 2005. Part of the act was the Capital Grant for Customer-Side Distributed Generation Resources program. It was designed to encourage businesses and government agencies to install electric-generating systems on-site to meet their own power needs.
"This is exactly the type of result we had in mind when we put together this grant program," Sen. Williams said. "Frito Lay will now be able to address some of its own energy needs. We are all aware of the energy crunch in the Northeast. We must do all we can to encourage on-site generation of power and alternative energy. There has been much debate about how to meet the future energy needs of Connecticut and New England. This is a case of getting real results."
The Frito Lay grant was part of $7.1 million made available under the program this summer.
