Williams Appoints Pharmacist to Medicare Council

Senate President Pro Tempore Donald E. Williams, Jr., (D-Brooklyn) announced today that pharmacist Daniel Fiore has been appointed to the Council to Monitor the Implementation of the Medicare Part D Program.

A resident of Brooklyn, Fiore owns and operates Daniel's Pharmacy located at 42 Reynolds Street in Danielson. Fiore earned his Bachelors of Science from the University of Connecticut in 1975 and worked in a pharmacy in Danielson until 1989, when he opened his own establishment.

"Mr. Fiore runs a local, small-town, independent pharmacy where he works with the same clients on a regular basis," said Senator Williams. "He's out there everyday dealing with this program and with the people whose lives are affected by them. His input will be crucial to the work of this council."

During the 2006 session, the legislature created the council to advise the Commissioner of Social Services on matters related to the administration and implementation of the Medicare Part D program. The council will advise on the effects of Medicare Part D on the ConnPACE and Medicaid programs, on pharmacies and pharmacists, and on physicians and other licensed drug prescribers in the state. The council will also provide recommendations to the General Assembly concerning the Department of Social Services' administration of Medicare Part D, and may provide federal legislative recommendations to the state's congressional delegation.

"There's some comfort to know that [the legislature] is concerned about these things," said Fiore. "There's not a lot of room for error, especially for smaller businesses that have to compete against larger companies. I'm feeling good about it."
