State Senate President Pro Tempore Donald E. Williams, Jr., (D-Brooklyn) recently announced the appointment of Terrance J. Walsh of Woodstock to the state Family Support Council. Walsh, the director of studies and head of the science department at the Hyde School in Woodstock, will serve on the council until June 2010 and was appointed as a family member of a child with disabilities.
"The Family Support Council serves a very important role in our state," said Senator Williams. "Terry Walsh is an educator and a father. He'll bring a great and welcome perspective to the important work that the council does."
Pursuant to Section 17a-219c of the Connecticut General Statutes, the Family Support Council assists the Department of Mental Retardation and other state agencies that administer or fund family support services. The council helps to maintain a comprehensive and coordinated system of family support services, to use existing state and other services efficiently and effectively, to identify and address needed services for families of children with disabilities, and to promote statewide availability of such services.
Specifically, the council gathers information and develops guidelines and goals for Connecticut's family support services; reviews existing policies, procedures and funding mechanisms and makes recommendations; and monitors implementation of recommendations and gives status reports to the governor and legislature. The council also advocates for family support services and compiles and distributes information on services.
"I'm excited. This is something that I've wanted to be a part of for a long time," said Walsh. "I'm glad that I can try to help families that are impacted by special needs."
