State Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) and Sen. Joseph J. Crisco, Jr. (D-Woodbridge), co-chair of the legislature's Insurance and Real Estate Committee, today asked state Insurance Department Commissioner Susan Cogswell to explain the process that led to the approval of misleading health insurance plan marketed by Aetna-SRC. The plans are now the subject of a lawsuit.
In a letter to Commissioner Cogswell, Sen. Williams and Sen. Crisco wrote, "We ask the following:
"Because of the allegations of a whistleblower, there is a perception that someone in the executive branch intervened on behalf of Aetna to gain approval for these insurance plans," the senators wrote. "As the media has reported, e-mail correspondence from your staff indicates serious concerns were raised about the validity of these plans, yet they were approved."
