Williams, Crisco Seek Information on Approval of Controversial Health Insurance Plans

State Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) and Sen. Joseph J. Crisco, Jr. (D-Woodbridge), co-chair of the legislature's Insurance and Real Estate Committee, today asked state Insurance Department Commissioner Susan Cogswell to explain the process that led to the approval of misleading health insurance plan marketed by Aetna-SRC. The plans are now the subject of a lawsuit.

In a letter to Commissioner Cogswell, Sen. Williams and Sen. Crisco wrote, "We ask the following:

  1. Please detail any conversations and other communication between the Governor's office and you or your staff regarding these insurance plans.
  2. Please detail any conversations and other communication between the Governor's campaign organization and you or your staff regarding these insurance plans.
  3. Please detail any advocacy by companies, groups or the Governor's staff or campaign organization for approval of these insurance plans.

"Because of the allegations of a whistleblower, there is a perception that someone in the executive branch intervened on behalf of Aetna to gain approval for these insurance plans," the senators wrote. "As the media has reported, e-mail correspondence from your staff indicates serious concerns were raised about the validity of these plans, yet they were approved."
