State Senate President Pro Tempore Donald E. Williams, Jr., (D-Brooklyn) was honored Tuesday night with the Advocate of the Year Award at the National Family Week Policy Forum held at The Village's Wethersfield Avenue location in Hartford. Senator Williams was chosen in recognition of his continuous support of outstanding policies that enhance the lives of children, families and communities.
"I am truly honored to receive this award from The Village," said Senator Williams. "I can't think of anything more important in people's lives than family. Family is why dedicated parents get up and go to work everyday. Through strong families, children thrive and grow into the adults who will lead us all into the future. Family is paramount."
During his state Senate career, Senator Williams' priorities have included the protection of children, improving the environment, and safeguarding social services critical to families in Connecticut. In the 2006 legislative session, Senator Williams led the charge for the state's landmark school nutrition legislation as well as other initiatives aimed at helping children and families, including implementing the Jobs for the 21st Century program, raising a provision to offer enhanced HUSKY coverage to children and youths battling cancer, and working to make college textbooks more affordable and accessible to students.
In the coming legislative sessions, which begins in January, Senator Williams will introduce his S.A.F.E. (Security Assistance for Education) Schools initiative, designed to set aside $15 million for security assessments, equipment, and training to ensure the safety of Connecticut's public schools.
"I have always worked with the parents and the children of this state in the forefront of my mind," Senator Williams said, "and rest assured that I always will. Your support is humbling, and I am grateful for it."
The Village, a private, non-profit community service organization, was founded in 1908 and was one of the first agencies in the country to provide homes for abandoned and neglected children. Today, The Village continues to touch the lives of over 5,000 children and families annually through its programs and services.
