State Senate President Pro Tem Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) today hosted students from the social work program at Eastern Connecticut State University (ECSU) who have compiled stories concerning the lack of access to health care in Connecticut. Today's presentation also included representatives from the Caring Families Coalition.
Sen. Williams, who in July declared that increased access to quality, affordable health care for all the people of Connecticut should be a top priority for the state, was impressed with the students' presentation. "It is very encouraging that the future leaders of our state are able to recognize and mobilize on a critical issue such as this one," he said.
"As we said this past summer, we will have two main goals in mind," Sen. Williams said. "One is to ensure comprehensive and quality health care for all adults and children in the state of Connecticut. The other is to reform the health care delivery system so that we stabilize or even decrease the skyrocketing costs of health insurance and assist in the retention and creation of jobs."
The ECSU students presented nearly 40 personal stories and messages of support for the health care initiative.
Many other lawmakers and advocacy groups have joined Sen. Williams' efforts on the issue since he announced it right after the close of the close of the 2006 legislative session. "The movement to increase access to health care in our state is gaining momentum as demonstrated today by the impressive work done by these students," he said.
