Senate Democratic Leadership Applauds Passage of Budget by Appropriations Committee

Democratic leaders hope Gov. Rell and GOP will follow suit and support a responsible budget

Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) and Senate Majority Leader Martin Looney (D-New Haven) applaud the hard work of the members of the Appropriations Committee for approving a revised Fiscal Year 2009 budget that cuts overall spending ($20 million) while at the same time making critical investments in nursing home staffing levels, prisoner re-entry programs, and public education.

The budget proposal is $110 million less than Gov. Rell's proposed budget and $108 million under the spending cap. Significant savings are achieved through a variety of sources, including the elimination of $100 million from the budget of the Department of Social Services (DSS), which has finished the last few years with budget surpluses of more than $100 million.

"In difficult economic times and with a recession looming, the Democratic members of the Appropriations Committee have approved a budget that cuts spending and does not require any tax increases for Connecticut families," said Senate Communications Director Derek Slap. "As budget negotiations continue, there will be tough choices and adjustments to be made. The Senate President and Senate Majority Leader hold out hope that targeted tax relief measures can be implemented, including scaling back the Business Entity Tax and enacting an Earned Income Tax Credit. This relief will be dependent on revenue projections due out next month. In the meantime, Democratic Senate leadership urges Gov. Rell to embrace a more modest spending plan than she originally proposed."
