Statement from Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn):
"The Senate Democrats have made strengthening ethics a top priority this legislative session and announced a sweeping ethics package in December. Our proposals addressed a number of important issues that will help strengthen the public trust in government, including pension revocation for corrupt officials and elected leaders, mandatory ethics training for legislators, and making the failure to report a bribe a criminal offense."
"Since our caucus announced its ethics package, other caucuses have followed suit, and many good ideas have been proposed. Last month, all the legislative caucuses and Gov. Rell's office began negotiating a final ethics package--determined to find common ground on a bill that the General Assembly could pass and the governor would sign."
"I believe Gov. Rell's nine-point ethics plan is the right bill at the right time. While it is not perfect, and no compromise bill ever is, it is a comprehensive ethics package that has the potential to strengthen public trust in government."
"The people of Connecticut want real reform and I am ready to take this ethics package to my caucus and move it forward as quickly as possible. It is my hope we can vote on this as early as next week."
