Senate Democrats Say Storm Clouds Are Over Connecticut—Special Session Should Include Action on Energy Crisis
Senate President is Preparing Proposal to Deal With Gas Tax Hike and Looming Home Heating Oil Crisis

Senate President Donald Williams, Jr. says that he and his caucus members have decided, after several days of meeting over energy issues, that next week's special session must include action on the energy crisis in Connecticut.
Since the end of the legislative session in early May, gas prices have risen dramatically. Families also face the specter of crippling increases in home heating oil contracts, many of which begin in the coming weeks and months.
"Families across Connecticut are hurting--and it is only getting worse. Senate Democrats are determined to do what we can to provide some relief. We know that rising fuel prices not only affect the cost of gas, but essentially everything--including food and clothing. While we can't stop fuel prices from rising, we can prevent tax increases from further driving up the price."
Senator Williams received a letter from Gov. Rell today, asking for the repeal of the gas tax hike and additional action on home heating oil prices--which he suggested just days before.
"Gov. Rell and Senate Democrats share the same concerns about the energy crisis in Connecticut," said Senator Williams. "We have also reached out to our colleagues in the House. They have similar concerns and there is mutual interest in addressing the crisis. I look forward to working with her and legislative leaders in the coming days to reach agreement on a responsible plan to help Connecticut families."
