Senate President says “Governor Rell’s plan appears to be a prudent approach.”

November budget hearing is next step in bi-partisan effort to balance Connecticut’s budget

“Here is what we know: the budget deficit has not deteriorated any further in the last month. Not counting one-time revenue, the budget gap has remained about the same.

While a comprehensive analysis is required before we can offer a full endorsement, it looks like Gov. Rell’s budget mitigation plan is a prudent step in the right direction. We appreciate her including a tax amnesty plan, a recommendation that Senate Democrats made to the governor months ago.

Gov. Rell appears to be waiting for the Nov. 18th OPM / OFA joint budget presentation before asking for a special session. We agree with the governor that legislative action would be premature before we see how the volatility on Wall Street has affected our budget.

It is quite possible that an economic avalanche may be heading our way and more cuts will be necessary. We must remain vigilant about making government more efficient and cost effective. An audit of the Department of Social Services, the state’s largest agency with a $5.3 billion budget, is critical if we are to deliver real cost savings to tax payers.”
