State Senate Democrats, just days after winning two-thirds of the state Senate seats, unanimously re-elected Senator Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) as Senate President Pro Tempore and Sen. Martin M. Looney (D-New Haven) as Majority Leader. The Democrats made their choices at a caucus in Hartford this afternoon.
Senator Williams, in accepting another term as the top Democrat in the General Assembly, said his number one priority is helping to turn Connecticut’s economy around, “Connecticut is experiencing, in varying degrees, what the rest of the nation is — a fragile economy, rising unemployment, and rampant inflation,” said Senator Williams. “It is imperative that we work with the Obama Administration, Gov. Rell, the new Democratic leadership in the House, and all our colleagues in the General Assembly to find solutions. This is no time for partisan politics, it is time to work together to help Connecticut families.”
In July of 2004, the state Senate elected Senator Williams to serve as President Pro Tempore. He was re-elected in January of 2005 and will be formally re-elected at the outset of the 2009 session.
“I am grateful for the support of my colleagues, and humbled by the challenges which lie ahead,” said Senator Looney. “Democrats were given a mandate to work with President Obama and Gov. Rell to help families make ends meet and to have government maintain essential services. As Majority Leader, I am eager to play a role in this critical mission.”
Senator Looney will be entering his fourth term as Majority Leader when he is formally re-elected in January.
