Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr. says great progress is being made in negotiations between legislative leaders and Governor Rell’s office on a plan to greatly reduce the current fiscal year’s budget deficit. Senator Williams says that while some details of the budget reduction plan are still being ironed-out, all sides are working together in a bi-partisan manner.
“There is no disagreement over the severity of the challenges we face or the need to take action,” said Senator Williams. “We will continue to prepare for Monday’s special session by reviewing the deficit reduction plan to ensure that cuts are being made in a sensible and strategic manner.”
Senator Williams also said that Monday’s special session is just one part of what will be a long process.
“There should be no doubt that the global economic meltdown is hitting home,” said Senator Williams. “What happens Monday will be a good first step toward addressing the current budget deficit. But make no mistake: this will only be a first step in what will be a very long path. Today’s news that 3,600 Connecticut residents lost their job last month suggests Connecticut’s bottom-line will get worse before it gets better. In these difficult times, we must work together to find solutions that will deal with the current crisis while also protecting our future.”
