Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) will accept an award this weekend from People’s Action for Clean Energy (PACE) for being an environmental leader and advocate for clean energy.
This legislative award goes annually to a legislative leader or leaders who help to forward policies which promote clean energy. PACE has been working on clean energy issues since 1974 and is the largest all-volunteer organization energy organization in the state.
“Senator Donald Williams has demonstrated a comprehensive leadership role regarding energy issues including renewables,” said Judi Freidman, of PACE. “Committed to developing clean industries in Connecticut, including mass transit, Senator Williams plays a highly-respected and vital role in the Connecticut legislature.”
“I thank PACE for its work in helping to promote clean energy in Connecticut,” said Senator Williams. “We will all need to work together to confront the enormous challenges we face. Connecticut residents and businesses pay among the highest electric rates in the continental United States, and bringing them relief continues to be one of our top priorities.
Senator Williams continued, “Our state needs a smart and sustainable energy policy that balances meeting our future energy needs, stabilizing rates, and assuring sound stewardship of the environment. I look forward to working with my colleagues in the General Assembly, Gov. Rell, and organizations such as PACE to bring about the reform we need.”
Senator Williams helped to pass a landmark global warming bill during the 2008 legislative session. House Bill 5600, AN ACT CONCERNING CONNECTICUT GLOBAL WARMING SOLUTIONS, created a timeline and benchmarks through 2050 for Connecticut to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions, thereby helping to make Connecticut a national leader in protecting the environment. The law requires Connecticut to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions to at least 10 percent below 1990 levels by January 1, 2020, and to at least 80 percent below 2001 levels by January 1, 2050.
Senator Williams also played a critical role in passing the energy bill of 2007 which increased energy efficiency, made important investment in ‘clean’ resources, and greatly helped expand conservation efforts.
The awards ceremony will take place at 6:45 pm at the Unitarian Society of Hartford, 50 Bloomfield Avenue, Hartford. For more information about PACE, please call (860) 693-4813 or visit www.pace-cleanenergy.org.
