April 2, 2009
Senate President Donald E. Williams., Jr. (D-Brooklyn) and Speaker of the House Christopher G. Donovan (D-Meriden) are reaching out to Gov. Rell today and requesting that bi-partisan budget negotiations begin immediately.
In a letter to Gov. Rell, the Democratic leaders write the following:
April 2, 2009
The Honorable M. Jodi Rell
Governor
State of Connecticut
State Capitol, Room 202
Hartford, CT 06106Dear Governor Rell:
As you know, the Appropriations and Finance Committees passed their budget bills today. You no doubt share our appreciation for the Committees’ diligence and dedication in developing their proposals and bringing out their bills two weeks ahead of schedule. This is a testament to the strong leadership of the Committees and the extraordinary efforts of all Committee members.
In an effort to keep the momentum going at this crucial moment, we respectfully suggest that negotiations between the Appropriations Committee Chairs and Secretary Genuario, focusing first on cuts to the budget that can be agreed upon, begin immediately. We call on you also to schedule regular meetings with leadership, beginning tomorrow, where we will seek to achieve agreement on the parameters for the budget.
The people of Connecticut are facing a fiscal crisis that most have never experienced in their lifetimes. As the leadership of this great state, it is incumbent upon us to put our shoulders to the wheel — and to put partisanship aside — to achieve the best possible results for all those who depend upon us.
We stand ready to meet with you at your earliest convenience, and as frequently as you are able.
Respectfully,
Donald E. Williams, Jr.
Senate President Pro TemporeChristopher G. Donovan
Speaker of the House
