State Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr. (D-Brooklyn) was recognized as a “Child Champion 2009” today at a ceremony hosted by the Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance in honor of his legislative commitment to improving the educational, health and emotional well-being of young children in Connecticut.
“The Alliance wanted to take the time today to recognize Senator Williams and a host of other legislators who have worked so hard this session to improve the lives of Connecticut’s young children, especially in this tough economic climate” said Alliance Executive Director Shaun McNally.
McNally lauded Senator Williams for his commitment to funding child-friendly initiatives like Head Start programs, family resource centers, and various school readiness programs.
“It is critical that as we navigate this fiscal crisis we never turn our back on our future,” said Senator Williams. “We must protect the quality of our schools by ensuring that education funding isn’t gutted. It is also important that we don’t shred the social safety net that helps provide health care and assistance to children in low-income families. I’m confident that we can work with Gov. Rell to make the best decisions for our children.”
The Connecticut Early Childhood Alliance is a group of approximately 50 state organizations and thousands of individuals committed to improving developmental outcomes in the areas of learning, health, safety and economic security for children ages birth to eight. The goal of the Alliance is for all children born in Connecticut to enter kindergarten healthy, eager to learn, and ready for school success.
One of the Alliance’s legislative successes this session has been the creation of a single form for preschool and childcare service providers to use to apply for state funding. That bill, House Bill 5841, unanimously passed the House and Senate and was signed into law by the governor on May 20.
