Senate Leadership

President Pro Tempore Donald Williams & Senate Majority Leader Martin Looney

May 30, 2009

Statement of Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr. Re: House Joint Resolution 122

Resolution Convening the General Assembly in Special Session

“Governor Rell’s attacks are unproductive. The unfortunate fact is that throughout the entire legislative session the governor failed to submit a balanced budget. Families and businesses across Connecticut want solutions, not angry rhetoric.

“In addition, she failed to abide by her own promise four months ago that pain in the budget would be shared fairly by all, and not balanced on the backs of the elderly, the sick, students, and the middle class.

The governor knows that budget negotiations continue. We all want an agreement as quickly as possible. But her recent proposals — Keno, cuts to children’s health care, and the elimination of the LIFE STAR medical transport — are not in the best interests of Connecticut’s residents. It is our hope that Governor Rell will finally enter the negotiating room, sit down at the table, and engage us in a constructive and responsible discussion that helps move Connecticut forward.”
