Statement From Senate President Donald E. Williams, Jr.

Re: Governor M. Jodi Rell’s Forthcoming Deficit Mitigation Package

“The budget agreed to by the General Assembly and Gov. Rell goes a long way to meeting the state’s obligations and protecting families and businesses from the recession.

Of course we all should all be concerned about the structural holes in the budget and the challenges they represent. Now is not the time for the governor to try to disown parts of the budget that she initially proposed — such as securitization, borrowing, and one-time fixes.

Most troubling is the failure of Gov. Rell to control spending in her agencies. By its own admission the administration has increased spending by more than $200 million.

In total, the budget contains $3 billion in spending reductions and we cannot afford for the Rell administration to fall short. Real deficit mitigation starts with the governor living within the constraints of the budget.

I look forward to working with the governor to take additional action as required.”
